JKK’s Kohjinsha SH6 Video Review

It’s up! He did an excellent job going over the device and voicing his concerns. A must see if you are thinking of purchasing the SH6.

Here’s a reply I posted in the Origami Project forums:

Just watched it. Very nice.
I’m sold. Very surprised how responsive the system was loading apps. Must be a combo of the 2GB RAM and fast hard drive. I was even more surprised how Media Center performed. Much more responsive than my Q1.
It’s too bad the thumbstick is hard.., but to even have 3 ways of controlling the mouse (touchscreen, track stick, and touchpad), it’s really flexible.
Too bad there’s no HSDPA/EVDO option. That’s one thing I really want. I can probably deal with a USB solution. Or if I’m really daring, replace the wifi mini PCI express card with a HSDPA/EVDO module and see if a SDIO or CF wifi card will work.

I’m sold but will wait until the end of the month. If an 800Mhz version comes out by then, we shall see, but I’m sure I will be satisfied with 600Mhz just from the video. I’ll email Data Evolution and ask if they will be carrying a US version of it. Maybe the battery life issues will be solved and I can use a US keyboard.

Anyway, here it is.

ProClip Not Making a Q1 Cradle

Just received an email from ProClip. I remember being included in an email list in case they ever release a cradle for the Samsung Q1.

Dear Customer:

We are sorry to say that we will not be making a holder for the Samsung Q1.

Due to an overwhelming request, worldwide, to develop all different kinds of holders/mounts, we must prioritize. Depending on the “life-span” of this device, we may decide to develop a holder at a much later time.

We are very sorry for the inconvenience and hope that we can provide mounting solutions, in the future, for your other devices.

Best Regards,

ProClip USA Customer Service

This is a bit unfortunate. I did end up buying a cradle from RAMMount months ago and using the ProClip car mount to install the cradle. The thing is, it’s built for a Q1 with the 3-cell battery. Since I’m always using the 6-cell, it has become basically useless. I was hoping ProClip would make a better solution.

This is a new game coming out for the Xbox 360 & PC this week. It received a 9.7 rating on IGN which is a very rare feat. I will definitely get a hold of this.

Amtek T770 Vendor Sighting

I just found a US vendor for the Amtek T770 at Pocket PC Solutions.  It comes in three configurations and the cost isn’t all that bad.

This is one of the only newer UMPC’s that retains the same slate design as the original UMPC’s such as the Samsung Q1 (It doesn’t have keyboard). The specs don’t deviate much from UMPC’s out there now except for the 2.5″ hard drive.  This is probably one of the better UMPC’s out there for holding the device with two hands and navigating the mouse pointer with the track stick.

UPDATE:
Mobility Planet also is listing the T770.

Total Cost for Kohjinsha SH6 If I Ordered Today

I still haven’t made a decision on my next UMPC but I wanted to see how much it would actually cost for me to order and upgrade a Kohjinsha SH6.

I went to Conics.net and went through the checkout process.  My order was a SH6, Black, 40GB, 512KB RAM, Vista Home, no DVD’s, and an extended battery.  Basically, the lowest priced configuration plus the extended battery.

Kohjinsha Extended Battery Available at Conics.net

Just noticed Conics.net now has the Kohjinsha extended battery for sale for $147.49.  It’s 5200mAH and will work in both the SA1 and SH6 series.

This should give the SA1 8-10 hours of use, and the SH6, around 4 hours.

Woohoo

Haha woo.  I made the front page of wordpress.com and news.wordpress.com under Technology.

Creating this blog 4 days ago has been a fun experience.  I never expected any kind of attention.  Within these 4 days, I’ve been labeled as a ‘blogger’, there are people googling ‘Rodfather’ to find this blog, and people actually visit this site.

This definitely motivates me to continue on.  I will try my best to keep it up.

Treehugger Picks Laptops For Fuel Cells

I’m always down for energy solutions that’s better for the environment.  I’m hoping fuel cell research picks up speed since it can increase battery life of devices significantly.  There was an announcement recently that Samsung will be releasing a fuel cell for laptops that will last 1 month.  Hopefully this will jump start the research into this technology.

Treehugger.com has been tracking fuel cells and thinks it makes most sense to implement them in laptops.  They list 5 implementations we should be keeping our eye on.
