DIY UMPC? Pico-ITX Motherboards Available

I try to visit mini-itx.com. They have a lot of cool DIY projects proving you can make a computer out of anything. My personal favorite is the ETPC.
They are now offering the EPIA PX 10000 for sale. You can check out their review here.
Looking at the size of the motherboard, you can possibly make your own UMPC. It supports the VIA C7 1.0GHz processor, similar to VIA equipped UMPC’s.

Give Away of the Day: Wondershare iPhone Slideshow

Even if you don’t have an iPhone, it could be an easy way to create mpeg4 video.

  • Add your photos or videos. With a single click, you can touch-up, crop, or rotate pictures and videos. It’s that easy!
  • Choose from variety of transition & ken-burns styled effects. Add soundtracks, and your own voice narration to your photo stories. Then, personalize them with titles and captions.
  • Generate to MPEG-4 format and share your home videos on iPhone anytime, anywhere!

Chumby Unboxing

This looks.. interesting. An always on device connected to the internet through wifi. The only button is the power button. The interface all touchscreen. Should be a nice desk/bedside clock with some cool widgets. Love the ‘box’.

iPhone Lighter

I will definitely use this the next time I’m checking out karaoke at the bar.

IMified Gains Pownce Support

I’ve tried IMified.com in the past as an easy way to post a message to Twitter, Jaiku, or even my blog, through your favorite instant messenger service. So far, they support using AIM, MSN (Live Messenger), or GTalk/Jabber to update your favorite social network.

They have just added a widget for Pownce which is a nice addition. I checked their widget list and it has grown considerably since the last time I’ve use it. If you are a heavy instant messenger user, it’s worth checking out.

In Search of my Next UMPC.. Intro

I’m at the bowling and as you can see from the above picture, it’s a bit ridiculous to get everything set up.
In this scenario, first I had to ask the bartender to see if he had a paperclip. Luckily he had one, removed the SIM card, and inserted it into my Blackjack phone.
Then I plugged in the Blackjack into the Q1 so I can get tethering going. If you’re wondering why I’m not using Bluetooth, it’s because the Blackjack’s bluetooth stack doesn’t work right with Vista. So the only way I could get Bluetooth PAN working is with USB.
So now, since I’m connected with the Blackjack, I basically lost the camera functionality since I want to stay online. So then I pulled out the iPhone, took and picture, removed the USB keyboard, and transfered the photo using the USB cable.

I’m finally on Live Writer now and ready to do some blogging.

So what’s the problem? I’m done sticking in peripherals. I’m done tethering.

So for one of my uses of UMPC’s, here the first criteria for my perfect mobile blogging machine.
+ Internal HSDPA/EVDO or a device with a PC Card/ExpressCard slot.
+ Full sized touch keyboard
+ Built-in Webcam
+ Better battery life
+ SD slot
+ More resolution. At least 1024×600 with a 7″ screen.
+ Maintain the same portability as my Q1

I will continue this series in search of my next UMPC. Stay tuned.

Ink Moblogging with iPhone Photos

Maybe I can do better at ink blogging… by using photos as my ink canvas.

For this, I’m using the iPhone to take the photo. Emailed the photo to myself. Inked on the photo using paint.net. Emailed the edited photo to flickr where it ends up cross posted to this blog.

Edit: Well, this is going to take some work. Tried three times before I could successfully get Flickr to crosspost this entry.

How to kick off a new tech
blog? By inking of course! I’m
sitting outside chillin with the

coming months, I will upgrade to
a new device. I’ll make sure to blog
my decision-making steps.
