Portable EVDO WiFi LAN Photos

JKK of JKKmobile asked me to shoot some cleaner photos in of my set up without the ‘vegetable’ in the background.  Hey, it’s a fruit, not a vegetable.  :-)

The photos above are the Novatel U727 EVDO USB modem, CradlePoint CTR350 EVDO router, and the Tekkeon MP3400 external lithium battery.

    Yes the Tekkeon will charge when you plug in the AC adapter and power your device at the same time.

    I have a stupid question though, will the Takkeon unit charge while it has a load (CTR350) on it?

    We have customers who just want to plug it in to charge at night, unplug the charger and take off and go in the AM, without disconnecting and reconnecting everything else.

    Will the Takkeon do this or does the load have to be removed to charge?

    Thanks for the update on the possible battery life.

    I also have spoken to Tekkeon and have verified what the problem is. Basically connecting the cable in the fashion I have been doing CAN CAUSE a surge of 20v to be sent through the cable to the device that the cable is already attached to. This can only happen depending on which two of the 3 pins connect first as you are seating the cable into the battery pack.

    So as a warning make sure you DO NOT attach the end cable to the device before attaching the plug into the battery.

    They said most devices like laptops etc have self resetting fuse that can be tripped if something like this happens and they will work with a short delay after the fuse is rest automatically. But it is safe to say attaching the cable the standard fashion like they have stated in the manual is your safest solution.

    I haven't really done any lengthy battery tests with the CTR350, but I did have it running for quite a long time (Maybe 4-5 hrs) and the Tekkeon battery showed it having a bit more than half the charge left.
    So I'm assuming at least 10 hrs.

    Thanks for the update. Well we have verified the tip is in the right way. After talking to Tekkeon we have verified that the main OUTPUT difference between the 3400 and 3450 is the amp output. the 3450 gives out 1 additional amp. The company is local to us so I have been there a couple of times but burning the CTR350's not a valid option for testing. So now I am waiting for them to get back to me sometime today with some possible tests. :-)

    I personally would not recommend for you to try what I have figured is the possible cause of the issue but I was hoping to see if you actually happen to remember if you have plugged in the cable the way we have here. It seems that you MIGHT have but never paid attention to it. :-)

    BTW, have you had any additional experience on the total time the battery pack has given you with the CTR350 since your post on the 13th ?

    Wow I'm sorry that has happened to you.
    I think most of the time, I plug the coiled cable into the MP3400 first to make sure I have some juice in it. I'm sure there were times I had the coiled cable plugged into the CTR350 first.. I'm not sure. I didn't think it would be an issue since the default setting when you plug in the cable is 5V, which is what the CTR350 takes in.
    Other than that, I would imagine it burning out by having the tip on backwards. The tips that comes with the pack only goes in with a positive connection..

    I hope you can help me. I have purchased 2 different MP3450 units and I have so far burned out 2 CTR350's when I plug them into the battery pack. I have spoken to the manufacturer and they have not been able to figure out why this is the case. The only thing after multiple attempts, we have been able to figure out (which still does not make sense why) is that when the CTR350 burns out (no longer usable) is when the MP3450's coiled cable with it's tip is already plugged into the CTR350 and then we connect the big end into the battery pack. at that point the CTR350 within seconds burns out. I am curious if you have EVER attached your CTR350 in this fashion ? Any feedback would be great. If you want to reach me privately through my email would be fine for me also.

    I have no clue. But if I had to take a guess, 12-16 Hrs depending on use?

  • Hey now... i was secretly working on a butane powered option for the CTR350...

    did you beat me to it? how long did you get it to run of one bic?
