Updated Gadget Bag

I received the last of my items today to complete my Asus Eee PC 1000H purchase (for now).

First is a generic travel adapter made for the Asus Eee PC 900/901.  The 1000/1000H uses the same 12V/3A so it works fine.  I bought two at around $8 a piece.  The totally was around $40 because eBay people like to rip people off on shipping.

On the left is the original AC adapter.  On the right is the new travel adapter.

Next, a new gadget bag! Yay!  I bought the Eagle Creek Vagabond bag from Amazon for $65.  I love it!  While there’s plenty of compartments, overall it’s very compact.  The dimensions are 11 x 12 x 3 inches, so the 1000H fits in there nicely.  It’s not a tight fit either.  There’s still a bit of space in the main laptop area.

Finally, here’s all my crap laid out on the table.  This is probably the most I will carry with me.  Under normal circumstances, I won’t need the external hard drive and Tekkeon battery.

From top-down/left-right:

(Top row) 12V/3A Travel charger, Canon TX1 case, LAN cable, Tekkeon MP3700 cable

(2nd row) Eagle Creek Vagabond Shoulder bag, Asus Eee PC 1000H, Tekkeon MP3700 50Wh external battery, external 250GB hard drive w/ cable

(3rd row)  Retractable mini stereo to mini stereo cable, Retractable USB to mini-USB cable, SuperLink transfer cable, iPhone Sync cable,  Kensington PilotMouse Mini Bluetooth mouse, CradlePoint CTR350 EVDO router.

(4th row)  Paperclip, Cleaning cloth, iPhone earbuds, Novatel U727 USB EVDO modem, iPhone 1.0

The CradlePoint router I have needs power but I can use the Tekkeon battery to run it if needed.  I forgot to include the bluetooth GPS receiver, but it’s tiny and takes very little space.

All packed up.

Archos 606 adds 3G

image

French site Archos Lounge announced the upcoming Archos 606 PMP/MID which will include 3G.  It appears to be an upgrade to the WiFi enabled Archos 605.  No word on availability but I’ll assume France only at this time.

A few details:

  • Slightly bigger screen than 605
  • All black
  • 30GB drive
  • Support for Opera widgets

Could be a great alternative to the iPhone/iPod Touch, Nokia Internet Tablets, and MID’s if you favor media playback and/or recording as a main feature.

Just got a RAM Mount Fujitsu U810 Car Cradle

I mentioned it in a blog post.
http://rodfathermobile.com/…ar-cradle/

Here’s a quick video of the install. While I was setting up for this video, FedEx came again and dropped off the GorillaPod for SLR sized cameras. I stuck the Aiptek A-HD to it right away and used it in part of the video.
That’s why there’s so much noise. The GorillaPod is stiff, which is good, but it cause a lot of noise while bending the joints.

The Taxman and his new MacBook Air

image

Bill ‘Taxman’ Miranda has been
eagerly awaiting the Mac Book Air.
He finally got one and has been
liking it so far.
His real-world battery tests have
resulted in better results than
most tests. He points out by
default, the power settings are
not set to ‘longer battery life’
mode.
For Sierra Wireless 875U
users.. it fits right into
the Air.
Congrats to the Taxman
on his brand new
‘Thin Air’.   :)

Check out his MacBook Air coverage here.

I’m trying out Ript in this post.  It’s fantastic.  Thanks Sumocat!

On the road again

Here’s my ghetto mount. The Fujitsu U810 in the dash compartment with the Novatel U727 sticking out of it.

Live webcam recording on UMPC w/ WWAN connection

Thought I should test Utterz’ live webcam recording with the Fujitsu U810 and Novatel U727 EVDO USB modem. Taking a cruise to Starbucks to test it out.

Another ink attempt on U810

Another ink attempt on U810
Well I figure I better practice
inking on the Fujitsu U810 since
I’ll be stuck with this for a
while. It’s just not easy writing
on this super light touch screen
that’s super slick with a thin
stylus.
I really wanted to use this for
mobile/on-the-go inking since
I grabbed the domain name
‘mobileinker.com.’  I envisioned
myself using this while out of the
house and moblog my entries
on the fly. :)

What sucks about the MacBook Air

  • It’s heavy.  3 lbs
  • No user replaceable battery
  • It’s huge!
    macbookairsonytzasuseeepc.PNG
  • No internal WWAN solution (HSPDA, EVDO)
  • No ExpressCard slot
  • No SD slot
  • Expensive. $1799++
  • Doesn’t include Apple Remote
  • Thin doesn’t always mean better.. will it wobble?
  • No touchscreen

I still want one.  I just won’t buy one myself.

Novatel U727 has built-in drivers

So I notice this post on jkOnTheRun announcing portable Firefox 2.0.0.8 is available.  This is handy for sticking Firefox on a thumbdrive so you don’t have to leave a history of porn links on a host machine (well, one reason).

So I figure this would be a nice app to stick in the Novatel U727 EVDO USB modem since it comes with a MicroSD slot that can take up to a 4GB card.  I ordered through evdoinfo.com who supplied a 1GB card for free.  Previously, I copied the install files from the CD to the card so I can install the drivers on any computer.  Looks like I didn’t need to.

I plugged in the U727 in my laptop so I can copy Firefox to it.  This is the first time sticking it into this machine and surprise, surprise, it comes with drivers and connection software already!  After double-clicking the ‘SMB Lite’ drive, right away it installed all the device drivers and software and is ready to be used.

Dynamism now selling Justin.tv lifecasting kit

image

Browsing the Dynamism.com site, I just noticed they have just partnered with Justin.tv to offer the Justin.tv-Kit

image

It includes a Sony VAIO TXN15PB, Sony VGP-8PL5 Enhanced Battery, Logitech Quickcam, and Targus 15.4″ Top-loading Backpack.  $2499.  You would think they would toss in a hat too? :-)

There’s no mention of the service but it should be Sprint since the TX series comes with an  internal EVDO card.

If you want to show the world your life 24/7, this is one convenient package to get there.  Jusin.tv just opened up its site to allow anyone to broadcast.  The quality is very nice since they’ve started using the On2 VP6 codec which flash supports.

I’ve tried many of the live streaming sites such as justin.tv, ustream.tv, and operator11.com.  It’s great stuff and has many uses.
